2018 Holiday Fun! Badminton Bowl & Annual Arizona High School Boy’s State Championship

Saturday, December 8th 2018

Arizona Badminton Center,

Mesa, AZ

Goldwater’s Badminton Manager, Alxs Galaint, played in the Arizona Boy’s State Championship with mixed results. In singles competition, Alxs drew a player that finished in the top four in the tournament, a tough assignment. Alxs lost by 10 but rebounded to beat his next competitor. The Bulldog lost his next match and was eliminated from singles. In doubles, Galaint was paired with a player from Maricopa High School. The two worked well together and won five straight matches to win the championship, no team scoring more than 16 points.

Alxs also paired in mixed doubles with Jennifer Baca, and Baca with Crisana Phan in women’s doubles at the Holiday Bowl part of the tournament. The event provided the Bulldogs from 6 to as many as 12 matches each and lasted seven hours. It was a great way to keep up the skill level and have a little fun on the side.

Elizabeth Palmo selected as 2018 Player of the year

Monday, February 4th 2019

Barry Goldwater HS

It was recently learned that Elizabeth Palmo was selected as the 2018 Northwest Section "Singles" player of the year, as voted by the Northwest Section coaches. This is a high honor for any player as it denotates the overall best player of the year among the eight schools of the Northwest. This also is the first time any Goldwater player has been selected for this award.

The Bulldog senior defeated all other position one players in the Northwest section, and only had one regular season loss the entire year to a player outside the section.  The “Black” level player contested three seasons on Varsity, and this season had a regular season winning mark of 13-3 (81.3%) from the singles one position. Plamo was also the team captain, offering valuable coaching to other players just learning the game. Congrats to a very valuable player.

Goldwater Badminton Basic Clinic will begin after school starting Monday, May 8th, from 2:30 to 3:30 in the Badminton Gym. The sessions are only one hour in length and any student can attend.

This marks the beginning of instruction of "basic" concepts of the game which all players are encouraged to attend. New players are especially invited to attend so they can get ahead of the time needed to understand these important skills.

The sessions will be held for four days, Monday through Thursday, and there is no cost.

For more information, E-mail Coach Lehman at shayne.lehman@dvusd.org, or see Coach Burke in the gym during the day.
