Glendale HS at Goldwater HS

Tuesday, August 28, 4:00-6:30, Main Gym, Goldwater HS

Home opener for the Bulldogs, and Glendale looks to be a great team to start with. The Cardinals finished 6th in the Glendale Union Region last year with a 8-6 overall. In looking at common teams that both schools played, Glendale lost to Centennial, Greenway, and state contender Sunnyslope, but won over Tempe and Agua Fria, both 9-0. They will not have a large team so Exhibition players may be without a match.

Goldwater HS at Millennium HS

Thursday, August 30th, 4:00-6:30, Main Gym, Millennium HS

14802 W Wigwam Blvd, Goodyear, AZ 85395

The Tigers of Millennium finished 2nd last year in the Metro Division, #17 overall in the state rankings. The Tigers had a fairly hard schedule, losing to Horizon 1-8, Skyline 0-9, and Pinnacle 1-8. They had bright points beating Mesa 6-3, and Boulder Creek 6-3, before winning against everyone in their region except Central HS. This is a top level program that had been to the state championship several times. Be Ready!!

Schedule for the week of September 3-8

Monday: September 3 (Labor Day-No School), 6:00pm-8:00pm, Main Gym, Special Practice

Tuesday: September 4, 4:00-6:30, Goldwater at Apollo

Wednesday: September 5, 2:30-4:30, Badminton Gym, Regular Practice

Thursday: September 6, Cactus HS at Goldwater

Friday: September 7, 2:30-4:00, Badminton Gym, Regular Practice

Saturday: September 8, 2-Bird Badminton Tournament at BGHS

Goldwater HS at Apollo HS

Thursday, September 4, 4:00-6:30, Goldwater at Apollo

8045 N 47th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85302

Goldwater has not been to see the Hawks in the last three seasons. Last year Apollo recorded a 1-12 season, good enough for a 35th position ranking in Division 2 and 8th overall in their division. Three players graduated leaving two seniors and a junior along with a sophomore as the current program.  Apollo’s JV recorded some wins and has five juniors possibly playing JV this season.

Cactus HS at Goldwater HS

Thursday: September 6, Cactus HS at Goldwater HS

The Bulldogs will play Cactus for the first time this year in what should be a Goldwater victory, on paper anyway. Cactus finished last season 9-4, 3rd in their division and ranked 11th overall in the state, one behind the Bulldogs. They did record loses against Mesquite, Ironwood, and Prescott, as did the Bulldogs. The difference, Cactus graduated five varsity players including 2017 state doubles runner-ups Nicole Osteen and Emma Dinnigan, they also retired their coach.

Their JV team was solid last season so it remains to be seen if the new coach can rally the team.

2 - Bird Badminton Tournament at Goldwater High School

Saturday: September 8, at BGHS

Download Team Information for this Event - Varsity Only

The 2 -Bird Tournament is always a fun event on the schedule. Each player has five singles games, and five doubles as well. The object of course is to win them all, and that’s the hard part. School’s number one players all play together, as do the 2’s, 3’s, etc., same in Doubles. Fitness is your greatest asset in this tournament, and anyone could win. The Bulldogs are the returning favorites, but lookout for Washington and Mesa as well.

The school district is taking a Fall Break day, but this is also our only practice of the week. Have a good time on the weekend but come back ready to go by Monday at 6:00.

Goldwater HS at Gilbert HS

Tuesday, September 11, 4:00-6:30, at Gilbert HS

1101 E. Elliot Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85234

Goldwater has never played Gilbert High School. They Moved down  from Division 1, in part because they had problems with their program last year in the Central Division where they ranked 5th overall. In looking at common teams played, one stands out. They were beat by Mesa High by the score of 0-9, and three of their players were seniors. The JV squad did not fair well either winning only 5 matches.

Verrado HS at Goldwater HS

Wednesday: September 12,  at Goldwater HS

The Bulldogs see the Vipers again this year at Goldwater’s Main Gym. The Dogs have never lost to a Viper Varsity team, but there is always a first time. The Vipers, on the 2017 season, won their section of 5 schools with 4 wins. It was however, the only 4 wins they got, finishing 4-9 overall, and finishing with a 24th overall ranking. They took loses from Washington, Kellis, Centennial and North Canyon, and Goldwater 0-9. There roster had eight graduates, and their JV lost to Goldwater 3-6. Their expected roster has 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and 2 sophomores playing.

Goldwater HS at Ironwood HS

Thursday: September 13, 4:00 - 6:30, at Ironwood HS

6051 W. Sweetwater Avenue Glendale, AZ 85304

Perhaps the most competitive match we will have all year, Ironwood IS one of the best programs in Division 2 badminton. They were a perfect 14-0 last season, winning their section and ranked number 1 going in to the state tournament. They were unexpectedly eliminated from the tournament in the 2nd round by Mesquite, 2-5. They defeated the Bulldogs last year 8-1 in a hard fought match, with the Goldwater JV taking a win over the Eagles, 7-2. Ironwood carried five seniors on the varsity line-up but also had three juniors and a freshman playing varsity as well.

Deer Valley Unified School District Badminton Tournament

Friday: September 14, 12-4, at O’Connor HS (Varsity Only)

Saturday: September 15, 9-2, at O’Connor HS (Varsity Only)

25250 N 35th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85083

Download Team Player Instructions - Varsity Only

The annual get together of district schools is also a one sided affair featuring the always talented, and extremely successful Mountain Ridge High School. Well trained and very athletic, the Mountain Lions have been to the state playoffs for the last seven years. With Boulder Creek in a rebuild pattern, Goldwater will be looking to drop O’Connor High to a third place finish this year. This will not be easy as the Eagles always seem to find girls to quickly learn the game and play hard at this event. Deer Valley High should also be in the mix as they return a very competitive group of players to the event as well.

Schedule for the week of September 17-22

Monday: September 17, 2:30pm-4:30pm, Main Gym, Regular Practice

Tuesday: September 18, 2:30pm-4:30pm, Badminton Gym, Regular Practice

Wednesday: September 19, 2:30pm-4:30pm, Badminton Gym, Regular Practice

Thursday: September 20, 4:00 - 6:30, Saguaro HS at Goldwater HS

Friday: September 21, 11:15-1:15, Half Day Practice (JV/Varsity Only)

Saturday: September 22, 9:00-3:00, Chaparral Firebird Tournament at Chaparral  HS (JV/Varsity Only)

Saguaro HS at Goldwater HS

Thursday: September 20, 4:00 - 6:30, at Goldwater HS

Goldwater have always done well against the Saber cats, but they are a Scottsdale school that always has athletes. The coaching staff has stabilized, and this could be the year they find their stride. Look for the Bulldogs to have a more experienced team, and that could be the difference in the match.
